The Spiral Wound Gaskets are mechanical seals manufactured to fill the space in "less-than-perfect" mating surfaces on the machine parts they are used on, where they can fill irregularities, preventing leakage into and from the joined parts while under compression.

The said gasket has the ability to recover under varying loads from high operating pressures and critical applications. It can withstand high temperature and pressure limits. Spiral wounds are comprised of a mix of soft gasket filler materials(such as graphite or Teflon), and by a specially formed metal (normally carbon-rich or stainless steel).

In the manufacturing process, the metal is wound outwards in a spiral while the filler materials are wound the same way but in the opposite direction.

This gives the gasket alternating layers of metal and filler, giving it its "spring effect" characteristic and resiliency from the effects of temperature difference across the flange face, and temperature and pressure fluctuations.
